Dog Food Label - Why use the term Crude? crude protein and crude ash.

What is crude protein in dog/cat food?

A pet food label must state guaranteers for the minimum percentage of crude protein and crude fat, and maximum percentages of crude fiber and moisture. The term "crude" refers to the specific method of testing the product, not to the quality of the nutrient itself.

What is crude ash in dog/cat food?

"crude ash" or crude ash content is a description of the amount of minerals in the food. Put simply, if you were to completely incinerate the food. all the major nutrients (proteins, fat,  carbohydrates) would burn away leaving the minerals behind.
